After two years the unforgettable finale of The Mandalorian‘s second season, Din Djarin and Grogu‘s journey finally resumes in the third season. Creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni have focused heavily on Mandalorian culture, which will include a journey to the devastated homeworld of the nomadic warriors: Mandalore. Watching the trailer, it’s also clear that Grogu is becoming stronger in the Force after training with Luke Skywalker.
Undoubtedly, the central theme this season will be who deserves to wield the powerful Darksaber and unite the scattered clans of Mandalorians. Din Djarin may not want to get involved at first, but he has already wielded the coveted weapon to defeat Moff Gideon. Bo-Katan Kryze, self-proclaimed heir to the throne of Mandalore, will either resolve the issue peacefully or become an enemy of the Mandalorian? While these are just some of the questions we ask ourselves, the debut has already arrived on March 1st on Disney+. But what do we know in advance about The Mandalorian’s third season?
The return of familiar characters
Some of the characters will return in The Mandalorian’s third season, including Moff Gideon. In an interview with People magazine (ref.), Giancarlo Esposito talked about what he expects to happen in the show’s future, also alluding to a fourth season. “It’s set in a huge universe to explore. So, I think this show will start laying the groundwork for the depth and breadth that will come in Season 3 and Season 4, where we’ll get the answers”,
It’s also known that Greef Karga, played by Carl Weathers, will make an appearance in the show, as briefly shown in the trailer sporting some new fantastic garbs and a new role. Amy Sedaris will also return to the show, playing Peli Motto, the mechanic who helped Din in the second season.
Katee Sackhoff‘s Bo-Katan Kryze seems to take on a much more prominent role in this series, which is evident from the trailer. While the second season ended with the uneasy alliance between The Mandalorian and Bo-Katan, it will be interesting to see how it will end in the third season.
The Mandalorian cult
Armorer is featured prominently in the trailer, scolding Din for removing his helmet and telling him that he is no longer a Mandalorian. The Mandalorian cult and its values are something that will be present, in fact central, in the opening episodes of the show. Some reports from the set suggest that Din and Grogu will have to visit the mines beneath the surface of Mandalore.
To atone for his transgressions, Din will have to visit the planet’s living waters. These hints are reinforced by the main trailer, which shows an apparently ancient Mandalorian helmet and Grogu facing an unknown assailant inside a tunnel.
Mandalore and its culture will play an important role in the third season. The clues indicate a deeper exploration of the character’s past and many legends. We hope that Favreau will rely on Dave Filoni to delve into the details and shed light on a narrative tradition that would excite veteran Star Wars fans.
This is all we know about the third season of The Mandalorian. But there are still some questions: will Grogu meet others of his kind? Will we finally learn more about the mysterious species that gave us Master Yoda? We’ll have to watch the weekly episodes released on Disney+.
This is the way.
